How To Check Tire Specifications?

Tire specification is a code comprised of letters and numbers that is written on the tire wall. Each tire number is absolutely different from other. This code explains the size of tire, its load carrying capacity, radius and rating of its speed. The technicality of the number is readable by those who are in this field.

The number is allocated by the manufacturers after getting the tire quality check and ensuring that it meets all the safety standards.

Tire number can be any but the meaning and the sequence is same for all tires. Here's how you can check the specifications of the tire. For reference let's consider the code as P203/45R16 98H

  • Type Of Tire
The first letter written in the code specifies the type of the tire. If the first and foremost letter is P, it indicates that the tire type is P-metric. These types of tires are made to match certain standards as per the place's transport rules and regulations. If at the beginning of the code no letter is found then it specifies that it is a Euro-metric tire. P-metric and euro metric tires have different load capacities. If there are letters LT mentioned either at the beginning or at the end, this specifies that the tire is made for light trucks. These tires normally need high inflation pressure than normal tires.
  • The Width Of Tire
Consider the number written in bold above. The number 203 after the letter P specifies the tire's width. So, in this number, the width of the tire is 203 millimetres.
  • Aspect Ratio
Aspect ratio is a two digit number mentioned after the width of the tire. It is the tire's height ratio according to the tire's width. In reference to above number, 45 mean that the height of the tire is 45% of the tire's width. The sidewall of the tire is as big as the aspect ratio.
  • Construction
The letter 'R' mentioned in the number specifies the radial. It says that the radial moves commonly across the tire.
  • Wheel Diameter
It is the diameter that can be measured across the wheel from one end to another. In measurement above 16 is wheel's diameter.
  • Load Index
It says that when the tire is properly inflated, how much load it can take. Here 98 is the load index.
  • Speed Rating
‘H’ mentioned is the speed rating specifying the tire's maximum speed.
